(Seguin) — The No. 1-ranked Class 5A Leander Rouse Raiders received a dominant pitching performance from Jacob Sainz to take game one of their area-round playoff series 8-1 over the Seguin Matadors on Thursday night at Matador Legends Ballpark.
Sainz fired a complete-game four-hitter, striking out 12, walking one and allowing just one run. Offensively, the Raiders scored five runs in the third inning and added three more in the fourth. Catcher Brody Sharp capped the five-run third with a grand slam to left field.
The Matadors broke through for their lone run in the bottom of the seventh. Griffin Welfel doubled with two outs to drive home Matthew Marek. Leadoff hitter Ethan Tipple went 2-for-3 to account for half of Seguin’s four hits. Nate Herrera contributed a double in the second inning.
Seguin will look to rebound tonight and keep its season alive in game two in Leander. First pitch is set for 7 p.m. If the Matadors force a game three, it will be held Saturday at 1 p.m. at Buda Hays High School.

(Bastrop) — The Marion Bulldogs grabbed a 1-0 series lead in their Class 3A area playoff with an 11-1 rout of Columbus on Thursday at Bastrop High School.
Marion turned a 2-1 lead into a 7-1 advantage by scoring five runs in the top of the fifth inning. Mateo Zuniga doubled to drive in two runs in the frame. The Bulldogs added four more in the seventh, with Brody Byler singling home a run.
Senior right-hander Huck Schoenvogel went the distance to earn the win. Schoenvogel has allowed just one run in 13 innings pitched this postseason.
Marion goes for the series sweep this afternoon at Bastrop High School. First pitch in game two is set for 5 p.m. If Columbus forces a game three, it will follow immediately.
(Seguin) — The Navarro Panthers will look to even their Class 4A area series with Wimberley tonight at the new Navarro High School.
Wimberley leads the best-of-three series 1-0 after rallying for a 4-3 win in game one Wednesday night in Wimberley. First pitch in game two is set for 7 p.m. at Navarro High School. If Navarro forces a game three, it would be held Saturday at noon at New Braunfels High School.
