Stamp Out Hunger Food Drive collects nearly 9,500 pounds of food

(Seguin) — The annual Stamp Out Hunger food drive is being described as a success. Local letter carriers collected approximately 9,500 pounds of food from their routes earlier this month.

The nationwide event invited residents to leave non-perishable food donations by their mailboxes for pickup by their letter carriers. The collected items this year have all been delivered to the Christian Cupboard, Seguin’s local food pantry.

Jennifer Garcia, a rural letter carrier with the United States Postal Service, is said to have played a key role in organizing the effort locally. She worked alongside Vanessa Moreno and both city and rural carriers to coordinate the collection and delivery of donations.

Garcia’s husband Jesse says the success of the drive would not have been possible without the generosity of area residents.

“Thanks to the whole community for coming together. Almost 10,000 pounds – it’s a great goal and hopefully next year, we will do it a whole lot better,” said Garcia.

The Stamp Out Hunger drive is organized each year by the National Association of Letter Carriers and is considered the nation’s largest single-day food drive.
