Seguin native, Grammy winner David Delagarza returns home for Central Park Concert

(Seguin) — The city of Seguin’s Central Park Summer Concert Series continues this Sunday with a special hometown performance by Seguin native and Grammy Award-winning musician David Delagarza and his Houston-based band, Los Souldees.

Best known for his longtime role with the Grammy-winning band La Mafia, Delagarza has spent decades performing across the country and around the world. This weekend, however, he says he’s looking forward to something a little more personal — performing for family, friends and the community.

“We’re really excited. This is a fairly new band I have here. We’re based out of Houston. A lot of people know me from the band La Mafia. That’s the band I tour with. But this is just like a side project that I have. We’re called Los Souldees. And yeah, we’re really excited about going to play in Seguin. Obviously, that’s my hometown. grew up in Seguin, graduated high school from Seguin, and we’re just, it’s going to be a lot of fun. I know all my family and friends are going to come out and it’s going to be a really fun time. I mean, we’re really, really looking forward to it. And I think people are really going to enjoy the music and the style of music that we play. It’s a little bit of something for everyone,” said Delagarza.

Delagarza says the band’s music appeals to a wide range of listeners.

“We play soul music, but with Chicano style soul music, which is basically soul music, To be honest with you, it’s what it is. We have some originals and we have our music. It’s on Spotify, not just Spotify, but all the streaming platforms. We have original songs, but we started out just doing mainly covers on the first album. We had a couple of originals but mainly covers. And it went really well for us. So, we have a new album coming out that’s going to be more originals with a couple of covers, but it’s doing really well. In Houston, we have a really nice following. Our shows are really good. We play maybe twice a month in Houston. And people can dance to it or you can sit back and just listen and have a good time,” said Delagarza.

De La Garza says each member of the band brings extensive experience to the group.

“The guitar player, his name is Chris Castaneda. He’s out of Waco, Texas. And he has a band that they tour also, they’re called Pride & Joy. And our drummer, his name is, we call him Chappy Luna. And he plays with a really popular band out of Houston. They’re called The Suffers. And they have toured all over the world, done the David Letterman show before it was over, done Jimmy Kimmel. They’ve done all the big shows. And he is part of this group also,” said Delagarza.

Hosted by the Seguin Main Street Program, the free, family-friendly Central Park Summer Concert Series kicked off last weekend with a performance by the Comal Community Band and continues through July 5. The series has become a summertime tradition, showcasing a variety of musical genres for local residents and visitors.

Guests are encouraged to bring lawn chairs or blankets. Food trucks will be available.

Concerts begin at 7 p.m. each Sunday evening. Remaining performances include Elevate on June 21, Music Forya Soul on June 28 and the San Antonio Symphonic Band on July 5.
