Guadalupe County to host free Bulk Clean-Up Day

Seguin, TX, USA / Seguin Today
Guadalupe County to host free Bulk Clean-Up Day

(Seguin) — Guadalupe County residents this weekend will have a chance to get rid of unwanted household items during the county’s next Bulk Clean-Up Day.

The free event will take place from 7:30 to 11:30 a.m. Saturday at the Guadalupe County Road and Bridge Department, located at 3100 N. Austin Street in Seguin.

The clean-up event is open to any Guadalupe County resident. Participants will be asked to provide a photo ID or utility bill as proof of residency.

According to Guadalupe County Public Information Officer Carmen Davila, the event has steadily grown since it began just over a year ago, with between 450 and 500 residents taking part during each collection.

However before arriving , Davila wants to remind residents of several important rules.

“We want to remind the residents of the safety precautions during the event. We have a maximum trailer size allowed through the drive-through event — 12 feet or less and no dump trailers are allowed. Residents do not need to get out of their cars. They simply drive through and allow access to the items for disposal. And we ask that residents try to group similar items such as metal, bulk, and tires together. This allows our staff to direct you to the appropriate drop-off stations as well as quick removal of items,” said Davila.

Davila says during the event, residents will get to dispose of a wide variety of household items.

“We do accept trash as long as it’s bagged in plastic bags so that it’s not something that we have to gather together. And in a trash bag tied up, then yes, that gets removed. Furniture such as sofas, tables, mattresses, household appliances, we see a lot of metal, which is the stoves, washers, dryers, scrap metal, people drop off as well. The tires, it’s just a reminder that we accept 4 tires per household and there is a size limit, 19 1/2 without the rims. Dry paint, as long as it’s not liquid, we will accept that. And ceramic toilets, we have seen people bringing those, but as long as they are in a box, that way they don’t accidentally get shattered or broken. Things that we do not accept are hazardous materials such as chemicals, gas, liquid paints, acids, brush limbs, yard debris, — we do not accept those. Fencing, construction type material, we do not accept those either,” said Davila.

Davila says there are also “several unusual items” that county crews cannot accept.

“We don’t accept junk vehicles or boats. It’s unfortunate that some people do try to bring dead animals. We just don’t accept it at this event. Again, I want to mention no dump trailers allowed and no gas in the mowers and equipment that you are bringing — everything needs to be free of the liquids. Sometimes things sit out in the yard for a while and they’re full of rusty rainwater — if people can, you know, be kind enough to remove that so that our staff can remove things safely and quickly,” said Davila.

All vehicles must enter from North Austin Street and turn onto North Guadalupe Street, about a half mile north of Interstate 10. Drivers will be directed through the Road and Bridge Central Yard to designated disposal stations before exiting onto the IH-10 frontage road. County officials say the event “provides residents with a convenient and free way to dispose of waste while helping keep Guadalupe County clean and safe.”
