Teen leader honored with Grandeza de Guadalupe Award

(Seguin) — A local teen known for his leadership and commitment to service was recently recognized during a meeting of the Guadalupe County Commissioners Court.

Parker James Gilman, a 16-year-old from Cibolo, was presented with the prestigious Grandeza de Guadalupe Award following the formal recognition read by Precinct 3 Commissioner Jim Wolverton.

Carmen Davila, the public information officer for Guadalupe County, says the award is reserved for individuals who demonstrate exceptional service and character within the community.

“So, the Grandeza de Guadalupe Award was adopted in September 2015 by the county commissioners. It is a county award that is presented to a person, entity — deserving of a special recognition,” said Davila. “The word Grandeza has been used as a title for Mexican nobility… to help recognize somebody who shows nobility, generosity, greatness, grandeur, magnificence.”

During the meeting, Davila says Wolverton highlighted Gilman’s many accomplishments.

“Commissioner Wolverton read about Parker Gilman and all of his accomplishments… and as a young man, he stood out as being generous, not just with his time and energy, but also focused on projects that were able to give back to the community,” said Davila. “There’s several things that a teenager could be out doing and he chose to find projects that helped others.”

Gilman recently earned the rank of Eagle Scout through the Boy Scouts of America. His Eagle Scout project at Steele High School brought together more than 20 volunteers to build and restore planter boxes, enhancing the school’s agricultural program and creating an outdoor space for students, including those with special needs.

In addition to scouting, Gilman is an active member of Future Farmers of America, a chapter officer at Steele High School, and a member of the Cibolo Youth Advisory Council. He has also been recognized by Universal City Police with a Good Samaritan Award after assisting a man in distress.

County officials say Gilman exemplifies the spirit of the Grandeza de Guadalupe Award, recognizing “integrity, leadership, and a deep commitment to improving the community.”
