Seguin Matadors earn multiple all-district baseball honors

(Seguin) — After capturing their second straight District 27-5A title, the Seguin Matadors collected a strong haul of all-district honors for the 2026 season.

Junior Ethan Tipple earned the district’s Most Valuable Player award. The right-handed pitcher led the team with 58⅔ innings pitched, posting a 0.36 ERA. At the plate, Tipple batted .362 with nine doubles, five triples, one home run and 21 RBI.

Junior Griffin Welfel was named Pitcher of the Year. Welfel posted a 2.01 ERA across 48⅔ innings pitched. Junior outfielder Austin Patek earned Newcomer of the Year honors. Patek batted .381 with eight doubles, a triple and 21 RBI.

Earning all-district first-team honors for Seguin were senior catcher Will Gray Mahaffey, senior second baseman Matthew Marek, senior third baseman Samuel Edwards, senior designated hitter Ian Moreno, junior outfielder Bryaden Monroe and junior utility player Mikey Hernandez. Honorable mention selections were Leighton Douglass, Nathaniel Herrera and Raul Rivera-Serrano.

The Matadors finished with 27 wins overall and went a perfect 14-0 in District 27-5A, going 27-1 in district play over the last two seasons. Seguin advanced to the area round by defeating South San in the bi-district round for the second consecutive year before falling to No. 1-ranked Leander Rouse in Class 5A. The Matadors are led by fourth-year head coach Mike Gonzales, a Seguin High School alumnus.
