(Wimberley) — Wimberley rallied past Navarro 4-3 Wednesday night to take Game 1 of the Class 4A Region IV area playoff baseball series.

The Panthers scored all three of their runs in the top of the second inning. Bayley Burgess and Tyler Riske led off with base hits, and Julius DeLeon followed with a sacrifice bunt. Ashton Wilkinson was then hit by a pitch before Emerson Elder drove home the first two runs of the game with a double to right field, scoring Burgess and Riske to give Navarro a 2-0 lead. Austin Davidson followed with a sacrifice fly to left to score Wilkinson and push the advantage to 3-0.

Navarro starter Ryan Davidson extended his playoff scoreless innings streak to 10 before Wimberley scored an unearned run in the fifth. The Texans chased Davidson in the sixth and scored three runs to take the lead. Austin Davidson singled with one out in the top of the seventh, but Wimberley reliever Jayden Hall retired the final two batters to preserve the win. Wimberley leads the best-of-three series 1-0.

Game 2 is Friday night at Navarro High School, with first pitch set for 7 p.m. If Navarro forces a Game 3, it would be held Saturday at noon at New Braunfels High School. The winner of the series will move on to face either Sinton or Zapata in the regional semifinals.
