Trash Free Gulf mobilizes Seguin volunteers for statewide cleanup this Saturday; sign-up still underway

(Seguin) – Residents still have time to sign up and take part in a statewide effort to keep Gulf waters clean beginning right here in Seguin.

Volunteers are being invited to join Gulf Trust for its Trash Free Gulf cleanup from 9 to 11 a.m. this Saturday at the Seguin ISD Irma Lewis Outdoor Learning Center.

Jay Kleberg, executive director of Gulf Trust, says this will be the second year that Texans will unite to prevent 45,000 pounds of trash from entering those waterways that flow into the Gulf.

“The Seguin cleanup is connected to a larger statewide effort of more than 60 cleanups that are focused on the fact that in Texas, we’re all connected by water. Every watershed in the state drains to the Gulf. And so, what happens in Seguin on the Guadalupe River impacts everyone downstream and our bays and estuaries and the health of our oceans,” said Kleberg.

Kleberg says unfortunately, most bodies of water across the state are crippled with litter.

“As you’ve seen, recent storms come through Seguin and other parts of the state, anything that’s on land, if it’s a plastic bottle or if it’s Styrofoam, there’s a high likelihood that that’s going to end up in a creek or a river like the Guadalupe. And then that will likely make its way into our bays and estuaries and into the Gulf. And so what happens in Seguin and in the litter cleanup there is important, not just for people’s health, but certainly for marine life and birds and other species,” said Kleberg.

Thanks to H-E-B’s Our Texas, Our Future, the initiative will continue throughout May with cleanup events scheduled statewide.
