(Nixon) — Navarro girls basketball coach Darrell Harborth coached his final game on Friday night as his Lady Panthers fell to Cuero 41-23 in the Class 4A Division 2 Region 4 finals.
Following the game, the longtime Lady Panther head coach became emotional as he reflected on the teams he’s led over the years including this year’s squad which gave him a deep playoff run.
“I talk forever about everyone, every team because I don’t forget. I’m super proud of every one of them.” Harborth said. “We’ve had some great teams and I’m just proud of all of them. But it ain’t about me, it’s about those kids. These girls over here, I’m pretty proud of them. They fought their butts off this year.”
Harborth retires after 27 years as the girls’ head basketball coach at Navarro High School. Harborth amassed 637 wins in his career. He led the Lady Panthers to the playoffs 25 times with 13 appearances in the third round of the playoffs, three regional finals appearances and a state semifinal appearance in 2014.
Navarro came up one game short of another state semi appearance on Friday. As for the game, Harborth’s daughter Tegan who was playing in her final game as a senior led the Lady Panthers with nine points. Fellow seniors Madi Gilliam and Izzy Geipel each had four points and senior Sarah Falor dropped in three points.
Coach Darrell Harborth plans to pursue his passion for farming full-time in retirement.
