(Seguin) — The Seguin Matadors opened the new Matador Legends Ballpark on Monday, falling to the 3rd-ranked team in Class 6A.
The San Antonio Johnson Jaguars, led by the state’s top prospect and Texas Tech commit Kayson Cunningham, took the first ever game at the new Seguin baseball field 10-0. The game was played in front of several Major League Baseball scouts.
Johnson scored eight runs in the first two innings and held the Matador lineup to two hits. Matthew Marek had one of those hits and came on in relief in the third inning, holding the Jaguars to just two runs in three innings pitched.
Seguin head coach Mike Gonzales said Johnson, a team that made it to the state championship last season, provided a good learning experience for his team at the new ballpark.
“It’s a great experience, a home opener, brand new ballpark. Not the way we wanted to start but that’s a good ball club over there,” Gonzales said. “They’re fresh out of going to the very end, the state championship game. They fell a little short, but if you want to make historic runs you gotta play teams like that to get your feet wet.”
Johnson’s senior shortstop Cunningham was robbed of a hit by Matador right fielder Elliot Weaver in the 5th inning. Weaver tracked down a screamer off the bat of Cunningham for the final out of the inning to end a Jaguar threat.
The Mats will next host the Seguin baseball tournament starting on Thursday morning. If you plan on going, bundle up because temperatures are expected to be in the 20s early on Thursday warming up only into the 30s later in the day.
(Marion) — Over in Marion on Monday, Marion Bulldog pitcher Huck Schoenvogel tossed a no-hitter on opening day as the Bulldogs took down Natalia 10-0.
The District 26-3A MVP last season, Schoenvogel struck out 12 in a dominant performance. Schoenvogel matched his older brother, Owen, who threw a no-no two years ago for the Bulldogs.
The Bulldogs will next host the Marion baseball tournament starting on Thursday.
(Jourdanton) — And the Navarro Panthers opened their season on the road with a 5-0 shutout at Jourdanton on Monday.
