Texas Theatre debuts new production this weekend

(Seguin) — Live theatre returns to the stage this February at the Texas Theater. Curtains open this weekend for the production of “On Golden Pond.”

Show Director Pat Hoppe says most folks might remember the movie class starring Katharine Hepburn, Henry Fonda and Jane Fonda.

“The play is about an aging couple who spend their summers on a lake in Maine, on Golden Pond and the man is a retired professor and he’s going to have his 80th birthday and he is beginning to have Dementia which his wife realizes. That’s basically the story. They are there for the summer. They have a daughter. There’s an issue between the father and the daughter. We are never told what it is. It’s an uncomfortable situation but that’s all resolved by the end of the play,” said Hoppe.

Hoppe says opening night, fortunately, has already sold out. She says it didn’t take long for folks to see the deal of having a dinner included with the Valentine’s Day performance.

Nonetheless, she says there’s plenty of time to catch the show this Saturday and Sunday and again next weekend, Feb. 21-23.

She says the talented and small cast make the effort worth it.“We have a really good cast. Greg Dew, who is our manager and director now of the theater is playing the lead role of Norman. Peggy Schott is his wife. We also have Johanna Bain who is playing their daughter and her son, Jack Johnson is playing the son and then we have Mark Schellard who is playing the mailman and Chance Martin who plays the boyfriend who does become the husband. It’s a great chance to come out and see some really good local talent,” said Hoppe.

Saturday and Sunday show times get underway at 7:30 p.m. while Sunday matinees begin at 2:30 p.m.

Tickets are only available at the door or online at thetexas.org. The cost online is $20 or $25 at the door.

The Texas Theatre is located at 425 N. Austin St.
