Seguin ISD clarifies district protocols should ICE arrive at local campuses

Seguin ISD clarifies district protocols should ICE arrive at local campuses

(Seguin) – The Seguin ISD is doing its part to make sure families understand how it hopes to respond should ICE execute a warrant at one of its campuses. Although it has been confirmed that no ICE agents have visited Seguin ISD campuses as of today, district officials say they felt it was important to offer clarity on protocols and procedures should a visit occur in the future.

Over the weekend, Seguin ISD Superintendent Veronica Vijil addressed Seguin ISD families of these protocols in a written statement.

The letter reads,

“Recently, the Department of Homeland Security announced a reversal of a policy that restricted arrests by Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) officers in locations such as schools, hospitals, and places of worship. We understand that this announcement may have generated anxiety and uncertainty for some of our families.

Seguin ISD is dedicated to creating a welcoming and inclusive learning environment for all students, staff, and community members. As a public school district in Texas, we are legally obligated to educate all students, regardless of their citizenship status, in a non-discriminatory manner.”

The letter also laid out relevant state and federal laws and local board policies – policies the district says outline clear procedures for interactions between campus personnel and law enforcement authorities.

Dr. Vijil further stated that SISD will review and address all immigration-related requests from law enforcement on a case-by-case basis in compliance with applicable laws and collaboration with appropriate authorities.

She states, “this process includes communicating with parents or guardians. If ICE executes a warrant at one of our campuses, we will promptly alert parents to prevent misinformation.”

Meanwhile, the district is heavily advising families that they take a moment to double-check their contact information.

“If you need to update your email address, emergency contacts, or phone number, please log into your family portal or contact the campus registrar for assistance. SISD is committed to working with our families and staff members to maintain a safe environment for everyone in our schools,” stated Vijil.

Included in the letter sent out to all families was a host of available resources to help families navigate through these policy changes in immigration. The provided links and resources included:

Schools have historically been off limits for immigration enforcement. This again all changed when, almost as soon as he took office, President Trump got rid of the decades-old policy that, again, prevented agents from arresting migrants without legal status in sensitive places such as schools, hospitals and churches. Such news has since raised fear among those families who currently have children enrolled in the local district.
