Marion drubs Jourdanton in bi-district playoff; Seguin plays in bi-district round tonight on KWED

(Floresville) — The Marion Bulldogs forced four turnovers in the first half and got out to a big halftime lead in blowing past the Jourdanton Indians, 46-14 in the Class 3A Division I Bi-District playoff on Thursday night in Floresville.

Marion linebackers Hayden Balser and Jaiden Riley had interceptions, while linebackers Hadley Mote and Kyle Zamora each recovered fumbles in the first 24 minutes. The offense took advantage to build a 25-8 lead at the half.

Running back Christian Sanchez had two big touchdown runs in the first half, a 30-yard scamper and a 52-yard run. The senior finished the night with 238 yards on the ground and three TD’s. Sanchez surpassed 1000 yards rushing on the season last night.

The Bulldogs increased their lead to 39-8 in the third quarter with two touchdowns sandwiched around a turnover on downs forced by the defense. Quarterback Kade Pape found Riley on an 11-yard TD strike and then Pape would score on a two-yard keeper. The junior signal caller accounted for four Marion touchdowns, two through the air and two on the ground.

With the victory, Marion moves on to the Area round next week. The Bulldogs will face the winner of the Goliad/Bishop Bi-District playoff. Those two teams are playing tonight in Victoria.

(San Antonio) — The Seguin Matadors travel to San Antonio tonight for a Class 5A Division I Bi-District playoff.

Seguin will take on San Antonio Southwest at Dragon Stadium. The Dragons finished the regular season undefeated at 10-0 winning the District 14-5A championship. The Matadors finished fourth in District 13-5A.

Half of the teams on Seguin’s regular season schedule made the playoffs in 2024. Three of those teams were district champions. Matador head coach Craig Dailey feels that schedule has readied his team for the playoffs.

“I think we’re very well prepared for the playoffs with that schedule,” Dailey said. ” We saw everything from option football to five-wide. So anything that you see in the playoffs, we saw. And then the defensive lines we saw in district, I think that is the difference maker in what makes our district the best in this region.”

Tonight’s bi-district playoff between Seguin and Southwest kicks off at 7 p.m. We’ll have the game on KWED.

(Jourdanton) — The Navarro Panthers are also in the bi-district round.

Navarro will face the Carrizo Springs Wildcats in the Class 4A Division II playoffs tonight at Jourdanton High School.

The Wildcats earned the top seed in District 14-4A. Navarro finished as the fourth seed in District 13-4A.

The Panthers played 10 straight games in the regular season before their bye last week. Navarro head football coach Rod Blount says his team stayed focused during the bye week to get ready for this week’s playoff game.

“I thought the kids had a great mindset coming into that week. We knew we wanted to get better. We wanted to heal up and kind of rest our bodies a little bit, but they stayed focused and had great practices,” Blount said. “We kind of cut the time back a little bit and got back to the basics and spent more time on the fundamentals.”

Tonight’s bi-district playoff between Navarro and Carrizo Springs kicks at 7:30 p.m. in Jourdanton.

We’ll have all your area high school playoff football coverage tonight on KWED. We’ll start our coverage at 6:20 p.m. with the Navarro Panther report where we’ll talk more with Navarro coach Rod Blount.

Then we’ll head out to Dragon Stadium in San Antonio for our Seguin football pregame show where we’ll have more with coach Craig Dailey inside the Matador report. And then it’s the Bi-District playoff between Seguin and Southwest at 7 O’clock tonight on AM 1580 and streaming at SeguinToday.com.
