Christian Cupboard Holiday Food Drive now underway

(Seguin) — The Christian Cupboard’s Holiday Food Drive is officially underway. The food drive, which runs through Dec. 31, is the non-profit’s annual attempt at filling up its cupboards for the holiday season and to get a jump start in feeding families for another year.

Christian Cupboard Executive Director Regina Lee says the food pantry has remained Seguin’s constant in ensuring no one goes hungry.

“It is our biggest push for food at one particular time and we garner quite a bit from this effort and the community is definitely on board with it. It’s always been on board with it. No one has their head in the sand saying we don’t have a food shortage or a food problem because we do. So, there is definitely a need and there is definitely a shortage of funds to get food and that’s why we are there,” said Lee.

Lee says folks are encouraged to either donate non-perishable food items or cash.

“Look at Facebook, we post all the time about the top items we would like on Facebook but my thing at this time is whatever your heart desires to give us and if you don’t want to make that decision, then give us some money because we do purchase food. We purchase food from the San Antonio Food Bank. Yes, we pay for it. No one gives it to us. We purchase food at HEB. Yes, we pay what you pay. We also pay for meat at Granzin’s Meat Market. They are kind of enough to give it to us in the allotments we like. So, we purchase foods, and we purchase eggs,” said Lee.

Lee says food is food and encourages folks to even look inside of their own cupboards before heading out to the store. She says an extra can of this or that goes a long way in building up their pantry.

“I’ll tell you a few things that we don’t give but if you (want) to give it, it is margarine. We usually don’t give margarine because we can’t afford it and jelly. Those are the two items off the top of my head. Something else is ramen. It’s a whole meal. It’s filling. If you’ve got a cold, put water in and you’ve got broth. Ramen is a good thing this time of year. But like I said, we do have a page on our Facebook that updates every week of what we’d like to have on our shelves,” said Lee.

The latest grocery list for the Christian Cupboard includes cereal (no oatmeal); peanut butter, pasta sauce, soups, stews and canned pasta; canned tuna or canned chicken; corn and carrots.

And whether it’s from your garden or latest hunting adventure, the cupboard says it will also happily accept those donations.

The Christian Cupboard is located at 516 N. Camp St. The cupboard is open Mondays through Thursdays from 9 to 11:30 a.m. A 24-hour drop off box for donations is also available on the north side of the building.

Both non-perishable food items and cash will also be collected during this year’s KWED Holiday Food and Toy Drive. The drive, benefiting the Seguin Police Department Blue Santa Program and Christian Cupboard, is scheduled from 7 to 9 a.m. Friday, Dec. 6, outside the radio station located at 609 E. Court St. Donations can also be dropped off in advance in the radio station lobby Mondays through Thursdays from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. and on Fridays from 9 a.m. to 2 p.m.
