(Seguin) – The Seguin ISD Board of Trustees tonight is expected to consider the naming of the baseball and softball complex currently being constructed on the Seguin High School campus. The agenda which calls for the naming of the complex or parts of it will be considered during today’s regular meeting of the Seguin ISD Board of Trustees.
The complex being built on the south end of the high school campus along College Street is a 2023 bond project. According to district officials, the baseball complex, that was used up to this point by the Matador baseball team, was not a district facility. For years, the high school baseball team played their games at the city of Seguin’s Smokey Joe Williams Field located at the Seguin Events Complex. The high school softball field, while it did sit on site, was also never officially named.
Tonight’s consideration of names comes after collecting nominations from the community for the past month. With the field set to be fully released to the school in January, the district wanted to ensure enough time for signage or other final details for its unveiling to the public.
Prior to the deadline for nominations, Emily Allen, Seguin ISD director of communications, indicated strong participation by the community. The following proposed names have since been filtered through ensuring they have met the required nomination criteria established by the district.
The received submissions include Rodriguez Memorial Complex (for Manuel) Rodriguez; Manuel Rodriguez; Hartenstein/Patek Field; Coach John Garcia Field; Chloe Belicek; Chloe’s Field of Dreams or Field of Dreams; William B. Ball Stadium; Fred (Freddy Joe) Patek and Master Gunnery Sergeant Martinez.
The meeting begins today at 6:30 p.m. in the Seguin ISD Board Room located in the school district administrative building.
