Smithson Valley rolls past Matadors

Seguin, TX, USA / Seguin Today
Smithson Valley rolls past Matadors

(Spring Branch) — The Seguin Matadors scored first, but the Smithson Valley Rangers would take control after that and cruise to a 47-7 win at Ranger Stadium on Friday night.

After taking the opening kickoff, Seguin scored on their third play from scrimmage when quarterback Corey Dailey hit a streaking Nik Henry downfield and the track star senior wideout out ran the Ranger defense to put the Mats up 7-0 just over two minutes into the game.

The rest of the half would go Smithson Valley’s way. Ranger quarterback Cole Spradling scored on a two-yard run to tie the game and kicker Trent Amaya drilled a 48-yard field goal later in the first quarter to put Smithson Valley up, 10-7.

The Rangers put four touchdowns on the board in the second quarter. Smithson Valley got a 65-yard pick six from safety Hunter Haug and a 65-yard touchdown pass from Spradling to P.K. Moeller sandwiched in between two rushing scores from running back Brad Sowersby to take a 38-7 lead at the half.

Smithson Valley put nine points on the board in the third quarter. Spradling found Brody Day for a 21-yard TD pass and the Rangers scored a safety when an errant snap went over Seguin punter Lane Seindenberger’s head and the senior kicked the ball out of the back of the endzone.

The Matadors were unable to move the ball consistently after their first score. Dailey completed 13 of 23 passes for 150 yards. The junior quarterback only attempted one pass in the second half, an incompletion. The Seguin running game was held in check by a dominant Smithson Valley front seven. Matador leading rusher Ian Moreno was held to only 17 yards on 12 carries.

With the win, the Rangers improve to 3-1 in District 13-5A. Seguin dropped to 2-2.

The Mats will look to rebound next week when they return home to Matador Stadium next Friday to host Wagner. The Thunderbirds are also 2-2 in district after beating Victoria East, 42-28 on Thursday night.
