City to open up discussion on potential rec, aquatic center

Seguin invited to be a part of the planning

(Seguin) — The city is giving Seguin residents a heads up about a community meeting that will focus on a discussion about the creation of a publicly owned and operated recreation and aquatic facility.

The city is currently working with consultants on a feasibility study that looks at the possibility of building a community recreation center, which could include swimming pools and lots of other indoor and outdoor amenities.

Parks and Recreation Director Jack Jones announced plans for the meeting during Tuesday’s meeting of the Seguin City Council. Jones says the public meeting will be held in two weeks, and they want as many people as possible to attend. This will be an opportunity for people to share their vision for a new rec center.

“We are going to have a community meeting two weeks from tonight at the Seguin Coliseum at 6 o’clock. We are going to have some snacks. We are going to have our consultants coming in town to lead a discussion to determine if a recreational center is to be a part of the future of the city of Seguin.

Your feedback would be fundamental in the determination if a recreation center is needed and if so, what experiences are most desirable by the community such things as a fitness room, a gymnasium, sports, classrooms, team room, indoor walking track, things like that,” said Jones.

Jones says the community feedback is a big part of the feasibility study. He says that’s one of the reasons why they want everyone to attend this important community meeting on Oct. 29.

“Our consultants from Brinkley Sargent Wiginton Architects along with PROS Consulting would be in town to lead the community discussion. Again, in person meeting two weeks from today on Tuesday, Oct. 29 6 o’clock. It will start at six maybe done at 7. We will see how long it goes, how many people are attending. With the new technology at the Coliseum, we are also looking at doing this as a livestream as well. If we are able to do a livestream, maybe we can get some live feedback as we are talking. So, the whole of this in-person meeting is to get feedback on the spot,” said Jones.

The city hired Brinkley Sargent Wiginton Architects to help with this process. The firm also worked with the city of New Braunfels in 2014, and helped with the process that eventually led to the popular Das Rec facility in New Braunfels.

The feasibility study will explore all options and give the city of Seguin all the information that it needs to make a decision about the project’s future. The community input will also help to shape that vision.

The public meeting on the community recreation and aquatic center is set for 6 p.m. Tuesday, Oct. 29 in the Seguin Coliseum.
