Planting positivity, happiness in Seguin

Petal It Forward campaign in full bloom in Seguin

(Seguin) — Positivity will be blooming in Seguin this Wednesday as a local flower shop takes part in a national campaign to help make people happy.

As part of the “Petal It Forward” campaign, Dietz Flower Shop employees will be handing out two bouquets of flowers to unsuspecting people around the city on Wednesday.

Jamie Lum, of Dietz Flower Shop, says the goodwill initiative is more than just about free flowers. She says it’s about spreading kindness.

“The Petal It Forward Campaign is just about making someone’s day, truly. Studies have shown that when people receive fresh flowers, it instantly boosts their mood up to 80 percent. So, if we can have that smile on someone’s face just simply by giving them free flowers and what happens is they get two bouquets. So not only are we able to make their day, but they can also in turn make someone else’s day by giving that second bouquet to a random stranger or a family member or friend or whatever the case may be,” said Lum.

After coming to a complete stop in 2020, the campaign is returning this year with over 700 shops participating across the country. Lum says her staff couldn’t be more excited to help spread a little joy around Seguin on Wednesday.

“We are calling ourselves Happiness Ambassadors and so they will be hitting the streets at various locations. They will be going to the library. They could be downtown just wherever they feel the need to be led to go, I guess, and then just meeting those random people maybe evening popping into a few businesses just to make someone’s day really – wherever they see somebody,” said Lum.

Lum says she knows firsthand the impact of how small gestures, such as flowers, can have on a person. She says her staff can’t wait to brighten up someone’s day and asks that those who are chosen for flowers continue to show that same level of positivity with others.

“We are lucky because we get to see that every day on normal deliveries as well. We see the surprise and the reaction and the happiness – ‘Oh, they are so beautiful’ – and their moods are instantly lifted and then when we tell them ‘Oh, we are getting this to you for free,’ of course, some people say, ‘is there a gimmick, what do we have to do?’ Absolutely nothing! Just enjoy the flowers and make sure and brighten someone else’s day by giving that second bouquet away and so, we see a lot of surprises, honestly,” said Lum.

This marks the 10th year that “Petal It Forward” continues its mission to spread joy through the power of flowers. The campaign is being launched across the globe by the Society of American Florists (SAF)
