Big first half propels Pieper to 56-37 win over Seguin Matadors

(Seguin) — The 8th-ranked Pieper Warriors scored the first seven touchdowns of the night and held off the Seguin Matadors, 56-37 in a battle of 2-0 teams in District 13-5A at Matador Stadium on Friday night.

The Warriors got on the scoreboard first by going 94 yards on the game’s opening drive. Senior quarterback Cayden Keeth capped the drive with a 53-yard run to put Pieper up, 7-0. The Warriors would recover a surprise onside kick after the touchdown and score just seconds later when running back Brady Hopper found the end zone from 16 yards out to make the score, 14-0.

Pieper would force a Matador turnover-on-downs and score their third touchdown with about two minutes left in the first quarter when Keeth hit Isaiah Champagne for a 20-yard score. Keeth would throw for three more touchdowns in the second quarter and running back John Hamilton added a rushing score to give the Warriors a 49-0 lead with just under a minute left in the half.

The Matadors got their first score with 10 seconds left in the half when quarterback Corey Dailey found receiver Ayden Avila for an 11-yard scoring strike to make the score, 49-6 Pieper at the half. Dailey would continue with the hot hand in the second half as he hit Lane Seidenberger for a pair of scores in the third quarter. The junior signal caller hooked up with receiver Nik Henry for three touchdowns in the fourth, the final one bringing the Mats within 20 points of the Warriors at the end.

Overall, Dailey completed 36 of 50 passes for 373 yards and six touchdowns. The Matador three-year starter has thrown for 13 touchdowns in the last two games. In the first quarter, Dailey eclipsed 5000 passing yards in his career. Henry caught 14 passes on the night for 153 yards. Seidenberger finished with six receptions for 73 yards. Avila hauled in four catches for 57 yards. Running back Ian Moreno had 81 total yards of offense on the night.
