(Seguin) — The Seguin Matadors and Pieper Warriors will meet tonight at Matador Stadium in a battle of 2-0 teams in District 13-5A.

Both teams return to the field after a bye last week. The Warriors got a huge 39-36 home win over Smithson Valley two weeks ago. Seguin won a 73-66 high scoring affair at Boerne Champion.

The Matadors have won three in a row. In all three of those victories, they’ve overcame halftime deficits. The UIL implemented a new rule this year to allow teams to use video during games and at halftime. And Seguin head coach Craig Dailey said he and his son, quarterback Corey Dailey, have taken advantage of the new rule.

“Our staff and our kids have done a great job at halftime adjusting and coming up with a plan and executing in the 2nd half. This video thing has helped out a lot. The defensive staff takes it to the kids. And Corey and I, we get together and we watch every clip from the first half,” Dailey said. “This goes back to his preparation of how he’s taking that video at halftime and going out and executing the 2nd half.”

Corey Dailey threw for 471 yards and seven touchdowns in the Matadors’ victory over Champion. Matador running back Ian Moreno also ran for over 200 yards against the Chargers. Head coach Craig Dailey says the Pieper defense will be a challenge for the Seguin offense tonight.

“They do a great job of not giving up big plays,” Dailey said. “They play with five (defensive backs). They try to keep everything in front and they have a lineman in Thor Myklebust who creates pressure. They don’t blitz much. They want to make you earn it all the way down the field.”

The Warriors are 5-0 overall on the season. They are ranked 8th in the latest Class 5A Division I state poll. Tonight is Pink Out night for breast cancer awareness. Kick off is set for 7 O’clock at Matador Stadium.
