Woman killed in car crash

Woman killed in car crash

(Seguin) – An Austin woman was killed following a vehicle accident on State Highway 123 Bypass near Seguin High School.

Lt. Mike McCann of the Seguin Police Department says the accident occurred just before 2 p.m. Saturday in the intersection of the 1300 block of East Cedar Street and the 1100 block of North Highway 123.

McCann says preliminary investigation shows that a 2018 BMW was traveling southbound on 123 when it reportedly struck the driver side of a 2022 Honda Pilot that was heading east on Cedar. Preliminary investigation also shows that the BMW had the green light when the Honda made its way into the intersection on a reported red light – causing the Honda to rollover and come to rest on its roof.

Killed was the driver of the Honda. The victim is identified as Martha Cruz, 59, of Austin.

The two occupants of the BMW along with a passenger in the Honda were all reportedly treated on the scene and released by Seguin EMS.

McCann says this accident has prompted the Seguin Police Department to again warn drivers about the responsibilities of being behind the wheel.

“Please make sure you are avoiding distractions when you are driving. Stay focused on the roads. Don’t let your phones or radios distract you from the number one purpose of being behind the wheel and that is safety and getting to where you want to go. Please make sure that we all wear our seatbelts, so we stay safe and get home to our loved ones. Be cautious when you are approaching intersections. A vast majority of accidents do happen at intersections. So, if we would just slow down before we approach an intersection, look both ways even if we have a green light. Look both ways for other vehicles that might be entering the intersection, and we can avoid an accident,” said McCann.

McCann says a full investigation including a reconstruction of the accident is still currently underway.
