Marion Bulldogs romp past Luling in district opener

(Luling) — The Marion Bulldogs dominated on both sides of the ball in a 43-7 rout over Luling on Friday night in the District 13-3A opener for both teams.

The Eagles got the ball first to start the game, but gave up the ball when the Bulldog defense got a turnover on downs. On Marion’s first possession, running back Tanner Otis took the ball to the house on a 38-yard TD scamper to put the Bulldogs up, 7-0 near the end of the first quarter.

Another turnover on downs by Luling would lead to another Otis touchdown run. This time, the junior sprinted 82 yards to the endzone to give Marion a 14-0 lead nearly four minutes into the second quarter.

The Bulldog defense would force a fumble on the next Luling drive. Marion linebacker Hadley Mote would fall on the ball at midfield and the offense would again take advantage again. Quarterback Kade Pape found receiver Jack Wells across the middle and Wells would turn up field and score from 35 yards out at the 3:45 mark of the second to extend the Bulldog lead to 21-0.

Following an Eagle punt, Marion would drive 66 yards in the final minutes of the half to another score. Otis took the ball over the goal line from one yard out for his third touchdown of the half and the Bulldogs took a 28-0 lead into the locker room at the half.

Marion senior Weston Teboe scored on a seven-yard touchdown run in the third quarter and Otis would find paydirt for the fourth time on the night with another one-yard score later in the third accounting for the final TD of the night for the Bulldogs. Luling got on the board with a three-yard run from Cayden “Tank” Lopez in the fourth to close out the scoring.

The Bulldogs will host Randolph in Marion in week two of the district season next Friday night. The Ro-Hawks toppled Ingram Moore, 28-14 in Ingram to open their district schedule. Llano beat Florence, 34-14 in Florence in the other District 13-3A game on Friday.

In one other area game of note on Friday night, Salado knocked off Navarro 28-21 in Salado. The Seguin Matadors had a bye this week. Seguin will host Pieper next Friday at Matador Stadium in a game you can hear on KWED.
