Matador offense explodes in 73-66 win over Boerne Champion

The Seguin Matadors warm up prior to their game against Boerne Champion at Boerne ISD Stadium on September 27, 2024.

(Boerne) — Quarterback Corey Dailey had a career night as the Seguin Matadors totaled over 650 yards of offense in a 73-66 victory over Boerne Champion in the Hill Country on Friday night.

Dailey, Seguin’s junior signal caller, threw for seven touchdowns and ran in the final score with 1:10 left in the fourth quarter to provide the winning margin. Dailey would join the defense on the game’s final play as a Champion pass into the endzone was knocked away by the Matadors to end the game. Seguin is now 2-0 after the first two weeks of the District 13-5A season.

The Matadors and Chargers were in a track meet in the first half. Champion scored seven touchdowns in the game’s first 24 minutes, while the Matadors countered with five of their own and a 31-yard field goal from Gabe Hernandez. Champion kicker Nathan Bell drilled a 51-yard field as time expired in the second quarter to stake the Chargers to a 52-37 at halftime.

The Mats took the second half kickoff and wasted no time getting back on the scoreboard. Running back Ian Moreno capped a drive with a 26-yard TD rushing score to bring the Matadors within seven after a two-point conversion. Seguin would get the ball back after a defensive stop which included a key sack by Kyle Medrano, and Moreno would run in a score from 37 yards out to tie the game at 52 just over three minutes into the second half.

The Matador defense would get the ball back to their offense again and Seguin would take their first lead of the game at the 2:52 mark of the third quarter when Dailey found tight end Lane Seidenberger for a 10-yard score to put the Matadors in front 59-52. Champion would get their first points in the half on a touchdown pass from quarterback Julian Navarrete to Zach Lopez from 14 yards away to tie the game at 59 just before the end of the third quarter.

In the fourth quarter, Seguin receiver Nik Henry hauled in his third touchdown of the night on a 30-yard strike from Dailey to put the Matadors in front, 66-59. Champion would miss a field goal, but the Chargers got the ball back after a Seguin fumble and tied the game a play later when Navarrete hit William Burgess for a 33-yard score to tie the game at 66 with 3:15 left in the game. Seguin would drive down the field in the next two minutes and ended the drive with Dailey’s game-winning score.

Dailey finished the game 25 for 33 for 451 yards and seven touchdowns. Henry had eight catches for 134 yards and 3 TD’s. Jacob Burns led the Matadors in receiving yards with 165 yards on eight receptions and a touchdown. Ian Moreno topped 200 yards on the ground with 205 yards rushing and a pair of touchdowns.

Defensively, the Mats sacked Champion quarterbacks four times on the night. Rylan Rubio had two sacks and Jared Rogers and Kyle Medrano had a sack a piece.

With back-to-back wins to start district, Seguin is now 3-2 overall on the season. The Mats have won all three of their games this season after trailing at half time in each of their victories.
