(Boerne) — The Seguin Matadors, coming off a district opening victory at home against Victoria East last week, are on the road this week as they head to Boerne tonight to face the Boerne Champion Chargers.

The Matadors beat Victoria East, 37-30 in a back-and-forth game last Friday in front of a homecoming crowd. In a tie game late in the fourth quarter, the Mats had the ball at the Titan 34-yard line. Quarterback Corey Dailey scrambled around to find senior wide receiver Nik Henry in the flat and then Henry scrambled the Victoria East defense as he darted in and out of traffic to take the ball to the endzone.

Corey’s father, Seguin head coach Craig Dailey said his play makers made a play when they needed it.

“On the sideline we told those guys they are next level players and at that point of the game, that’s what you gotta do,” Dailey said. “Your players gotta make plays. And when the game’s on the line, you gotta give your best players the ball.

“Funny thing about that, I get home that night and Corey says, ‘Dad you’re probably gonna yell at me about that play because I probably should’ve gotten the ball out sooner,’ but he made the play when we needed to and Nik did the rest.”

The Matador defense turned away the Titans on their next possession when linebacker Damian Garcia intercepted a pass in the endzone and Seguin was able to run out the clock. Garcia, Marcus Troy, Dylan Eisen-Sepeda, Gavin Gill and Jared Rogers all had made huge contributions on the defensive side of the ball. Rogers had a couple tackles for loss, a strip sack and a blocked field goal.

“Two big plays,” coach Dailey said of Rogers’ sack and field goal block. “And then he made a lot of other pressures on the quarterback. So, I’m really proud of what he’s doing right now.”

The Chargers are looking to rebound after falling to Smithson Valley, 42-10 on the road last Friday. They are 3-1 overall on the season.

Boerne Champion will host the Matadors in the Hill Country for their homecoming tonight. Kick off is set for 7 O’clock at Boerne ISD Stadium.

In other area games tonight:
