Deadline nears for entry into Downtown Scarecrow & Skeleton contest

(Seguin) — You’ve got only a couple more days to decide whether it’s going to be scarecrows, skeletons or both. Monday is the deadline to enter this year’s Downtown Scarecrow & Skeleton Display Contest.

For years, the Seguin Main Street Program has hosted a contest to officially welcome the start of the fall season.

Blair Friar, the assistant director for the Seguin Main Street and CVB, says the competition began in 2000 as a way for the city and the Guadalupe County Fair Association to help welcome the guests that travel in for the annual fair and PRCA rodeo. She says the window displays go up the week of the fair parade and are displayed until Pecan Fest held at the end of the month.

“Our goal of the whole program is to really get downtown decorated for fall and just really kind of start that excitement. It’s a change of season and an exciting time. So, that’s kind of the goal of the project is to really get people to decorate their storefronts and really make downtown look really wonderful for the season. We do love it when our businesses decide to participate and we’ve had some really unique scarecrows and skeletons over the years so we love seeing them come out every year,” said Friar.

Friar says adding skeletons into the mix of fall décor is a recent trend for the city and encourages folks to use their creativity and imaginations to enter the best decorations possible.

“We added the skeletons I think two years ago, and it was very exciting. People were excited to get to do that option too, so it has been a really great program for us,” said Friar.

Friar says the city is hoping to welcome several new entries and reminds folks that they don’t have to be in downtown Seguin to participate.

“You don’t necessarily have to have a storefront downtown to participate. We can find a storefront for you. We have some businesses that every year, they are like ‘we would be happy to host one. We don’t do one ourselves.’ But they will host you so don’t let that stop you if you are still interested in participating, we can certainly find a storefront window for your scarecrow or skeleton. We want everybody to join in on the fun,” said Friar.

Both businesses and organizations are eligible to participate in the friendly competition.

All entries will be judged by local celebrity judges on Wednesday, October 2. All entries must be up by October 1.  Entries will be judged on creativity and uniqueness. Entries should remain up until October 28.

A free entry form that can be found at the Main Street Program office located at 200 South Austin Street. They may also sign up online at www.seguintexas.gov.
