(Seguin) — Coming in needing five three-point baskets to reach 100 on the season, Seguin senior Desiree Zuniga canned four giving her 99 treys with one game left to play as the Lady Matatdors fell to New Braunfels Canyon 52-33 on Senior Night at Seguin High School on Friday.
“When I got here, Des did everything right from day one,” second-year Seguin head coach Veronda Kendall said. “She’s a great example of a complete student-athlete. Committed to the program and the gym. A gym rat getting up shots, which is why she’s able to have the kind of season she’s had and have a record like she has with 99 three-pointers in a season. She’s put the work in and it’s paid off for her.”
With less than a minute to go, Zuniga had two three-pointers in the contest. Working off screens, Zuniga made two three-point shots in successive possessions as her teammates tried furiously to get her to 100 in front of the home crowd, but the Lady Mats eventually ran out of time. Zuniga will have one more game to go for 100 when Seguin plays at Boerne Champion on Tuesday night.
Seguin guard/forward Presley Rangel played in her final home game as well. Kendall also praised the effort the senior Rangel gave to the team.
“(She’s) great defensively,” Kendall said of Rangel. “Works hard for us defensively. (Desiree and Presley) are just two great student-athletes who have been a pleasure to coach.”
Zuniga finished with a team-high 13 points on the night while freshman Britlyn Walls added nine for Seguin. The Cougarettes were paced by Sophia McDonald’s 15 points. Maia Aldrich had 13 and Carlee Sturm dropped in 11.
The Lady Mats will close their season with Zuniga needing one three-point basket to get to 100 on Tuesday night at Boerne Champion. The game will tip at 6:30 p.m.
