(Seguin) – It’s cookie time. Thousands and thousands of boxes of cookies made their way into the hands of local girls over the weekend, sparking the most popular time of the year for the Girl Scouts.
Denise Crettenden, a volunteer with the local Girl Scout troops, says the shipment of cookies for this year’s annual cookie sale rolled into Seguin Thursday. She says it’s now up to the individual girls and their troops to get to work.
“So, it’s cookie time. This is a part of the year where the girls are not just raising money for the awesome things that they do but they are learning things like marketing, and handling money and business ethics and just how to be a young entrepreneur because the girls that get out there and have booths and make signs and do all the legwork that is who is going to sell all of those cookies. They really learn about putting forth effort and the returns on that,” said Crettenden.
Crettenden says all the favorite cookies that folks have come to love over the years return to this year’s line-up. She says the cost per box is $5.
“There are no new cookies this year and they tried out some online only cookies last year. There’s nothing like that this year. It’s just nine varieties of cookies so there is Thin Mints, Samoas, Adventurefuls, S’mores, Trefoils, Do-si-dos, Tagalongs and the gluten free Toffee-tastic and then a very favorite of many people, the Lemon-Ups,” said Crettenden.
Friends and families of local Girl Scouts should expect a knock on their door or a friendly text from their favorite troop member. Otherwise, Crettenden says tracking down the cookies is pretty easy.
“So, you can either go onto the Girl Scout website and find the Find Cookies portion. Put in your zip code and it will tell you all the booths that are happening in your area and what times and when the girls will be there and exactly where. The council booths start in February so those will be the big ones like Walmart and HEB but there’s lots of wonderful independent businesses that are allowing girls to sell cookies outside their business as well. Those continue and then there’s also ways to find cookies that you can buy from troops and either have shipped or donate them. If you don’t want to eat the cookies, there’s lots of troops that will sell them and then we donate them to organizations,” said Crettenden.
Crettenden hopes this year’s cookie sale also brings more exposure to the program. She says there are just troops waiting to sign up local girls up.
“The other thing to remember is that it’s not too late to join Girl Scouts this year. We have a lot of availability, spaces in different troops and we really want to get a few new troops started especially kindergarten, first grade when they are ready to learn new things and make some new friends and also people can call me or contact Girl Scouts if they are interested in either having their girl join Girl Scouts or if they would like to be a volunteer. This is my 21st year to be a volunteer for Girl Scouts and I love it and I think everyone would love it too,” said Crettenden.
