Veterans Day celebration set for this weekend in Seguin

(Seguin) — If the weather cooperates, there are big plans in place this weekend to salute military veterans here in Guadalupe County. Several local veteran service organizations have come together to host a Veterans Day celebration on Saturday, starting in downtown Seguin.

Marlin Howze, of the Disabled American Veterans Chapter in Seguin, says this get started with the annual Veterans Day Parade.

“The lineup begins at 9:00 (Saturday morning), and we’ll be wrapping around Central Park. We’ll be starting northbound on River Street, so we’re going to be going north on River, which typically is a southbound road, but we have permission to go ahead and line up heading north. We’ll wrap around the park. At 10:00, the parade begins sharply, and it will proceed down Court (Street) going west, and will turn on Erkel Street and go until we hit the intersection of Erkel (Street) and Jefferson (Avenue), which is Veterans Park where it will end. Then at 11:00, we start the ceremony,” said Howze.

This year’s guest speaker is Lt. Colonel Gilberto Perez, who currently serves as the commander of the Communications Squadron at Joint Base San Antonio-Lackland.

Howze says if there’s severe weather, they will have to cancel the event, because they don’t have a backup plan that’s available to them this year.

The celebration is put together each year by the Guadalupe County Veterans’ Council, which includes membership from the DAV, two VFW posts, the American Legion Post in Seguin, the American GI Form, and the Guadalupe Valley Young Marines.

Again, the parade is scheduled to start at 10 a.m. Saturday in downtown Seguin, with the Veterans Day program starting at 11 a.m. Saturday at Seguin’s Veterans Park.
