Pre-fair events underway for 140th annual Guadalupe County Fair

(Seguin) – Pre-weekend events are officially in full swing for this year’s 140th Guadalupe County Fair and PRCA Rodeo. A BBQ cook-off, mutton bustin contest and cornhole tournament are among the schedule of events for this weekend.

Gail Damerau, a member of the Guadalupe County Fair Association board of directors, says pre-fair events are great in helping to launch excitement for the annual fair scheduled for Oct. 12-15.

“Basically, we ran out of time the week of the fair so we went to having a pre-fair weekend where are going to include our Mutton Button, and our scholarship BBQ cook-off and we will also have a cornhole tournament,” said Damerau.

The start of the Fair Queen’s contest also gets underway at 6 p.m. Sunday with personal interviews.

Check-in for the 20th Annual CBA (Champions Barbecue Alliance) State Championship BBQ Cook-off and Jackpot Beans contest will be held Friday and Saturday. Arrival of teams begins at 7:30 a.m. Friday followed by the team captain’s meeting at 6:30 p.m.  Entry is $200 for brisket, chicken, pork ribs or port butt and $30 for beans. A kid’s division is also available.

Mutton Bustin check-in will be held on Saturday from 3 to 4:30 p.m. at the rodeo arena. Mutton Bustin begins at 5:30 p.m.

Boys and girls ages 3 to 10 are eligible. To be eligible, kids must be between 30 and 65 pounds. The contest will be limited to the first 125 contestants.

New this year will be a cornhole tournament hosted by 830 OG Cornhole. The scholarship fundraiser will be held Saturday at the dance slab building. Check-in is at noon. Entry is $25 a person. Belt buckles and cash prizes will be awarded. The event chairperson can be contacted by calling 210-896-9388.

“We’ve added a cornhole tournament. We are pairing with the 830 OG Cornhole organization out of Schertz and the cornhole tournament funds will be supporting our scholarship fundraiser. There will be raffle prizes and a first-place team gets a buckle so it will depend on how many teams we get there but the more the better so come on out and help the cornhole tournament be a success,” said Damerau.

Contests details, guidelines, and BBQ cook-off registration can all be found online at gcfair.org.
