(Seguin) — The Seguin Matadors scored on four 60-yard plus touchdowns while the Mat defense forced three turnovers and ran back a fumble for another score in a dominating 57-0 win over San Antonio MacArthur at homecoming on Friday night at Matador Stadium.
Senior running back John Jackson started the big play scoring in the first quarter with a 68-yard run to paydirt to get the Matadors on the scoreboard. He would add another score on a four-yard run in the second quarter to put Seguin up 15-0.
The defense would get in on the scoring when Matador defensive back Jeremiah Dodson would scoop up a fumble and return it 60 yards for a touchdown to make the score 22-0. A 67-yard TD run by junior running back Devin Hall increased Seguin’s lead to 29-0 with a little over two minutes left in the second quarter.
Matador senior Landon Trost would intercept a pass on the next MacArthur possession and the offense would execute the two-minute drill to perfection, capping off a drive with a 20 yard touchdown pass from sophomore quarterback Corey Dailey to receiver Jacob Burns on the last play of the half. The TD was one of three thrown by Dailey on the night.
On their first play from scrimmage in the second half, the Matadors would make it two touchdowns in two straight plays from scrimmage when wide-out Nik Henry caught a swing pass from Dailey and sprinted 77 yards to the end-zone to put Seguin up 43-0. John Jackson would go 66 yards for another score and Devin Hall would catch a six-yard TD pass from Dailey to finish off the night’s scoring in the third quarter.
John Jackson moved over the 1000 yard mark on the season with his fifth straight 200-yard plus rushing effort. The senior had 204 yards on the ground to up his total to 1089 yards on the season through five games. Devin Hall had 105 yards rushing. Nik Henry finished with 110 yards receiving and Corey Dailey was 14-24 for 237 yards.
Aedus Tobias would come up with the Matadors’ second interception of the night in the fourth quarter as Seguin’s defense kept the Brahmas out of the end-zone and limited MacArthur to just 130 yards of total offense. Seguin had 575 total yards in the game.
After the game, Seguin head football coach Craig Dailey talked about how his team has bounced back after a tough start to the season.
“Everybody was kind of counting us out (when we were) 0-3, but we played some pretty tough teams early on and they kinda exposed some things we needed to work on,” Dailey said. “Our staff did a good job of coming up with plans to fix those needs and our kids bought in. We’ve had good practices the last two weeks and I think it’s translating to the field.”
The Matadors will have next week off and then will travel to Boerne on October 6th for a showdown with Boerne Champion. Both teams are 2-0 in District 12-5A after the Chargers beat New Braunfels Canyon 40-21 on Friday night. The game will kickoff at 7 p.m. in Boerne.
