(Geronimo) — We have a big rivalry game on the radio for you tonight in Geronimo.
The Navarro Panthers will tangle with the Cuero Gobblers this evening on KWED. Both teams won their openers last week, with the Panthers blasting Navasota 34-8 at Erwin-Lee Field and the Gobblers routing El Campo 41-7 in Cuero last Friday.
The Gobblers won last year’s match-up between teams in Cuero. These squads are very familiar with each other, having squared off five times in the last three years including the playoffs.
Cuero comes into tonight’s game ranked 4th in Dave Campbell’s Class 4A Division II state football rankings and Navarro head coach Rod Blout says Gobbler senior quarterback Mason Notaro is the head of the monster Cuero offensive attack which has a lot of size and speed.
“The quarterback Nataro does a great job of leading (their offense). He’s a big play guy He’s a true dual threat, great passer, does a great job of sitting in the pocket, throws a great ball and can beat you deep in the passing game,” Blount said. “If you’re not taking care of your responsibilities staying in your lane, he can hit you in the run game pull it and he can be gone in a flash.
“It’s a great team that covered in speed and athleticism with a great big offensive line in front of them to open holes.”
The Panthers and Gobblers kick things off at 7:30 p.m. tonight at Erwin-Lee Field in Geronimo and we’ll have all the play-by-play action for you on KWED. (Natalia) — Speaking of the Marion Bulldogs, they are on the road tonight at Natalia. The Bulldogs fell 41-31 at Hondo last week. The Mustangs are 0-1 on the season after being shutout by Jourdanton last Friday.
Marion head coach Ryne Miller says Natalia will be hungry to get their first win with a physical style of play on offense and defense.
“They’re physical, they’re up-field. They do a great job of tackling and (they’re) great in space,” Miller said. “We really have to move our guys around to put our guys in a good space to be successful. So they’re just like their offense, they’re physical, they’re gritty, they get after it, kinda of like a hard-nosed old-school football player. So, we have a challenge this week for sure.”

(Seguin) — The Seguin Matadors and New Braunfels Unicorns will meet Saturday night in the 111th edition of the Guadalupe River Bowl.
Both teams come into the game at 0-1. Seguin fell 51-48 at Alamo Heights last Friday. The Unicorns dropped a 27-24 decision to Denton Ryan in Belton last Thursday as the Raiders won the game with a walk-off two-yard touchdown pass on the final play of the game.
