(Seguin) — The Seguin Matadors and New Braunfels Unicorns will meet Saturday night in the 111th edition of the Guadalupe River Bowl. New Braunfels has won the last nine meetings in the series and 15 out of the last 16. Seguin’s last win came in 2013, a 38-31 win in overtime. The Unicorns won last year’s matchup 31-7 in New Braunfels.
Both teams fell last week in their first games of the season. Alamo Heights defeated the Matadors 51-48 last Friday at Alamo Heights High School. The Mules scored 16 points in the third quarter with the aid of special teams to turn a tie game into a 44-28 lead going into the fourth quarter. A furious comeback by the Mats in the fourth fell short.
The Unicorns dropped a 27-24 decision to Denton Ryan in Belton last Thursday as the Raiders avenged a 34-33 loss to the Unicorns in 2022. Denton Ryan won the game with a walk-off two-yard touchdown pass on the last play of the game.
Unicorns quarterback Leighton Adams is back for the football season after being injured in an off-field accident just before the UIL playoffs last year. The senior was electrocuted and fell 35-feet after climbing a utility pole. Adams rehabbed through the off-season and started last week’s game against Ryan.
Seguin head coach Craig Dailey says he’s happy to see Adams back in the lineup for the Unicorns and he says Adams is a weapon for the New Braunfels offense.
“It’s a miracle. I’m happy that that young man is getting to play football again because it was a very scary situation I’m sure for him, his family and the New Braunfels team. It’s good to see him back out there doing what he gets to do,” Dailey said. “He’s a good football player. He’s a returning starter, very accurate with the ball and he can beat you with his legs.
“And then they have two really good receivers in Lance Beeghley and Lane Duke who are hard to defend. They’re big up front and they have the same running back from last year. So, they have a lot of guys back on offense that we saw last year. So, it’s gonna be a challenge against our defense again of stopping the run and having to win one-on-one match-ups on the outside.”
