(Alamo Heights) — The 2023 high school football season starts Friday night for the Seguin Matadors.

The Mats will be on the road at Alamo Heights in a rematch of last year’s season opener won by Seguin 42-39 at Matador Stadium. The Mules had a number of suspensions going into that game, mostly seniors who were lost to graduation but the San Antonio Express-News still ranks the Mules as the number two Sub-Class 6A team in the area.

Seguin head coach Craig Dailey says the Matador defense will need to key in on Alamo Heights junior Michael Terry, who plays quarterback and will also line up at wide receiver. Dailey says Terry is the Mules’ play-maker who will get the ball a lot.

For the Matadors offensively, Dailey says the Mules’ defense will present his team with a lot of different looks.

“Honestly, they give you a little bit of everything so we gotta take what they give us,” Dailey said. “They’ll play off ten, 15 yards from you and dare you to throw underneath. And then the next snap, they’ll be in your face and bring in everybody. So, our kids are gonna need to do a good job of applying their rules and take what the defense gives us.”

Kickoff between Alamo Heights and Seguin is set for 7 O’clock Friday night. And you’ll hear the game right here on KWED. Our High School Football Friday Night coverage starts at 6:15 with the Navarro Panther Report with Head Coach Rod Blount followed by the Marion Bulldog Report with Head Coach Ryne Miller. The Panthers host Navasota on Friday while the Bulldogs are on the road at Hondo.

We’ll have our Matador pre-game show from Alamo Heights High School right after the Bulldog report where we’ll hear more from coach Dailey during the Seguin Matador Report. It’s all apart of our High School Football Friday Night coverage on AM 1580 and streaming online worldwide at SeguinToday.com.

(Belton) — There are a couple games of note Thursday night on the high school football schedule. Seguin’s opponent next week, the New Braunfels Unicorns are in Belton tonight to take on Denton Ryan.

New Braunfels came from behind to beat the Raiders 34-33 in last year’s season opener. Kickoff between Ryan and New Braunfels is set for 7 p.m. at Crusader Stadium on the campus of Mary Hardin-Baylor University.

(Laredo) — And Seguin’s District 12-5A foe Boerne-Champion is in action Thursday night. The Chargers are in Laredo to take on United South. That game starts at 7 O’clock at Bill Johnson Stadium down in Laredo.
