Student accidentally fires gun on school bus

(Seguin) — Seguin ISD officials have released a statement about an incident involving a firearm on a school bus. An elementary school student is said to have accidentally discharged a loaded gun on a school that was entering the Jefferson Avenue Elementary School parking lot. Officials say fortunately no one was injured.

The bus driver is said to have immediately recovered the handgun from the student and the Seguin Police Department was notified. Detectives are currently on the scene working to determine why the child had a loaded gun on the bus, and why the gun was fired.

According to initial reports, the young student did not threaten anyone with the weapon, but district officials say this is still a very serious situation and it represents a significant breach of the district’s safety protocols. The student was removed from the campus while the investigation continues.

Students from Jefferson and Koennecke elementary schools, as well as one student from the Ball Early Childhood Center  were on the bus at the time the shooting. The district has notified the parents about the incident and assurred them that all of the children were unharmed by the weapon.

School counselors are being made available for any student or family in need of assistance following this incident.

“Possessing and discharging a firearm on school property violates state and federal law, as well as our Student Code of Conduct. Student and staff safety remains our top priority in Seguin ISD. Parents are urged to ensure that students are prepared and in compliance each school day. Students should report any unsafe activity to a teacher, bus driver or school administrator. We will cooperate with this active police investigation and share any additional information about this situation as it becomes available,” wrote the district as part of its statement this morning.

We will have more on this story as additional information becomes available.
