(Georgetown) — After playing 18 innings and scoring six runs a piece, the Navarro Panthers and Sealy Tigers will finally get together today to play at least seven more innings to determine who will move on in the UIL Class 4A Region IV Area round baseball playoffs.
The teams played a marathon 11 inning game on Friday night in Hallettsville, with the Panthers emerging with a 3-2 victory. Tiger starting pitcher Garret Nedd had his no-hit bid ended in the 6th inning when consecutive singles by Landun Taylor and Marco Moncada brought home two runs for the Panthers to give Navarro a 2-1 lead.
Sealy right fielder Roy Thompson lead off the bottom of the 7th inning with a solo shot to right to tie the game. The game would remained tied at two until the top of the 11th, when Navarro’s Bryce Nall scored on a throwing error by Tiger catcher Dylan Aguado.
In the bottom of the 11th, Nedd doubled to lead off the inning but was caught off the base thanks to a heads-up throw to second by Panther third baseman Matthew Villanueva. Navarro pitcher Caleb Thomas retired the next two batters to end the game.
Thomas picked up the win by going five shutout innings in relief, striking out four. Friday night’s win by the Panthers evened the series at a game apiece.
The Tigers won game one last Thursday, 4-3. The Panthers had a runner on 2nd base with one out in the bottom of the 7th, but Sealy pitcher Ethan Doyle would strike out the final two batters to close out the victory for the Tigers.
Game three scheduled for Saturday in Hallettsville was rained out. The Panthers and Tigers will now play a win or go home game today at Georgetown East View High School.
