(Buda) — A base hit from Hays catcher Bella Gomez plated Mia Gomez in the bottom of the 7th inning leading the Lady Hawks to a 2-1 walk off win over the Seguin Lady Matadors on Friday night after a three-hour rain delay at Hays High School. The win by the Lady Hawks put them up 1-0 in the UIL Class 5A Bi-District best-of-three series.
Gomez, the leadoff batter in the Lady Hawk lineup, would lead off the 7th inning with a hit and steal two bases forcing Matador head coach John Garcia to intentionally walk the next two batters to create a force play opportunity at home for his defense. Gomez would make the strategy moot when she slugged a pitch from Seguin’s Madyson Shultze to the gap in right center field to end the low scoring affair.
Seguin would get on the board first in the top of the third inning when Chole Belicek ‘s single drove home Ashlie Aguilar with the only run of the ball game for the Lady Matadors. Hays would answer the Lady Mats run in the bottom of the fourth inning to tie the score.
The game would remain tied until Gomez’s heroics in the bottom of the 7th. Shultze would be saddled with the loss, going two-plus innings for Seguin in relief of starter Kendall Hurt who went four innings and only allowed one run.
The Lady Mats will need to win two on Saturday at Seguin High School to advance in the playoffs. Game two will be held at 2 p.m. Saturday afternoon and should Seguin win, a game three will follow game two. You’ll hear game two and three, if necessary, on KWED. Our coverage of Seguin playoff softball starts with our Lady Matador pregame at 1:45 p.m. Saturday afternoon on AM 1580 and streaming at SeguinToday.com.
(Geronimo) — Meanwhile in Geronimo on Friday, the Navarro baseball team was in no need of fielders thanks to a perfectly dominating performance from senior pitcher Bryce Nall.
Nall struck out every batter he faced in tossing a perfect game against San Antonio Memorial in a 10-0 Panthers win at Navarro High School. The perfecto locked up the District 28-4A title for the Panthers and was the 2nd perfect game Navarro threw at Memorial in three days.
The Panthers will compete next week in the UIL Class 4A Bi-District round.
