(Seguin) — New softball and baseball programs have been started in Seguin on the middle school level. Last week, a team representing the city’s two middle schools competed in a game on the softball diamond and this week, a Seguin middle school baseball team will play their first game.

48 student-athletes tried out for the baseball team, with 17 making the cut. Seguin High School baseball coach Mike Gonzales has been working with middle school athletes and coaches and he says he’s excited about the future.

“I like the group that we have. We have a lot of good athletes in there. They’re motivated.” Gonzales said. “We’re excited they get to play for two to three years before they come into (high school). We’re excited for them and they’re excited. They’re like a blank canvass. They’re ready to go, they’re all attentive, (…) all ready to learn and grow this program, so it’s pretty exciting.”

Although there is only one baseball and one softball team for the district’s two middle schools, Gonzales says he hopes the district can expand the middle school programs with more funding to hire additional coaches.

The first middle school softball game in the history of the Seguin ISD was played on Thursday, April 13th. The team made more history with their first program victory in a tournament win on Saturday. The middle school softball team would go on to win their second game on Saturday as well. The Seguin middle school baseball team will play their first game on Wednesday, April 19th.
