(Seguin) – It’s not only a brand-new year but a whole new year of making sure you don’t go hungry.
The schedule for this year’s 2023 Seguin Food Distribution events has been released. The schedule promotes the monthly distribution of food at various locations thanks to various congregation and community efforts.
Kicking off the year with the first drive of 2023 is First Baptist Church located at 1314 E. Cedar St just across from Seguin High School. The church is set to host this month’s drive beginning at 9 a.m. Tuesday.
Like clockwork, the local church has been a signature location for the hosting of these regular food drives.
Worship Pastor Jordan Hangerup says since the very beginning, First Baptist Church has wanted to be a part of the solution in making sure local families didn’t go to bed hungry.
“We want to be the hands and feet of Christ so we just don’t want to tell people about how their eternal life can be found but we also want to meet the needs that they have in this life right now. So, to feed people who are otherwise having a hard time buying groceries with higher prices and what not, we want to meet their physical needs so that we can also meet their spiritual needs,” said Hangerup.
In fact, the local church will again host a majority of this year’s food distributions. Hangerup says the church wanted to ensure that the needs of the community were being met each month.
“We intentionally knew that Faith Lutheran Church and GRMC and Caterpillar all had one to two distributions on different months and so we intentionally filled in the seven months that were not already covered by their efforts,” said Hangerup.
While hundreds of pounds of food are provided to the dozens of cars that drive through each month.
Hangerup says he still knows that there are plenty others who remain on the fence of seeking and accepting help.
“I would say this is a safety net not a hammock and folks are going to have a hard time here and there. If you need food because grocery prices are higher, you had something happen in your life, maybe you are out of work, come over and get some help. You will get back on your feet and you will be able make ends meet again but if you are going through a hard time, by all means come and take advantage of this. This is for all who are in need,” said Hangerup.
With the holidays and the increasing price of foods, volunteers expect that these next couple of months will be especially hard on many families. Nonetheless, Hangerup says volunteers at First Baptist
“We start our distributions at 9 a.m. and we run until we run out of food so if you need food, definitely be in line by 9 a.m. and you will get served,” said Hangerup.
Those needing assistance are asked to visit Freshtrak.com. This will be the site that folks will need to enter their information each month.
