(Seguin) — The Seguin Public Library regularly fills up your head with books, periodicals and other resources that they offer for free as part of their collection. It’s still doing that in 2023, but this week, it’s also going to help fill-up your belly a little bit. The Seguin Public Library is teaming up with area food banks to offer a free visit by a traveling mini-grocery market, better known as the Mobile Mercado.
Assistant Library Director Sylvia Christy says the Mobile Mercado will be in the library’s parking lot from 10:30 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. Friday. She says this is a totally free event, and she hopes that people will come and take advantage of the free food that will be offered that day.
“We’re partnering with the San Antonio Food Bank and the New Braunfels Food Bank to bring their Mobile Mercado. It’s a mobile food truck, where people can come in and get free vegetables and foods that are in season to supplement their food basket,” said Christy.
Christy says the Mobile Mercado is a mini-grocery store and there will all types of items for people to load up into their bag.
“Everything is free. They will be getting some seasonal fruits and vegetables. They will get one bag, and people will go through the little truck and get as much product as they can fit in that one bag. It will be while supplies last,” said Christy.
The library and the food banks are able to help offer this service, thanks to a generous contribution from a sponsor. Christy says all people need to do is show up this Friday.
The products for this event are sponsored by Community First Health Plans, and again it’s a partnership with the San Antonio and the New Braunfels food banks,” said Christy.
In addition to the free food, Christy says there will be some other resources offered to people who attend.
“There are going to be some tables with information about, you know, making healthy choices. A nutrition educator will be available as well. There will be some informational resources for people to be able to, you know, create healthy meals with the fruits and vegetables that will be given that day. So, it’s all about promoting health, and then helping the community with a little bit of produce that can be a little bit expensive at this time too,” said Christy.
Again, the free Mobile Mercado will be available from 10:30 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. this Friday in the parking lot of the Seguin Public Library, located 313 W. Nolte St. More information can be found on the library’s website, library.seguintexas.gov; or by calling the library at 830-401-2422.
