(San Antonio) — Two Seguin Matadors and two Marion Bulldogs made it a night to remember at the San Antonio Sports All-Star Football Game at the Alamodome on Saturday night.
Seguin’s Devin Matthews and Jakob McLeod along with Marion’s Dominic Castellanos and Kross Kelso were among 119 San Antonio area players invited to participate in the 45th anniversary of the game featuring the area’s top seniors playing in their final high school game. All four seniors were a part of Team Gold.
Matthews who lead Seguin with 21 touchdowns this past season, crossed the goal line early in the 2nd half on a 29-yard screen pass from quarterback KK Brashears. Matthews, the season’s District 12-5A MVP, darted in and out of the Black team defense breaking a couple of tackles taking the ball down the left sideline to the endzone.
“I knew I was getting the ball.” Said Matthews. “So, I was like I gotta make a play because I probably won’t get this chance again and I made a play and scored.”
A stellar returner, Matthews’ scored six touchdowns on kick and punt returns during the season for the Matadors. He would get one return opportunity on Saturday and would take advantage by returning a kickoff 50 yards to midfield in the 2nd half, the longest return by either team during the game.
Marion All-District 13-3A First team linebacker Kelso also made a mark on special teams. Thanks to a key block by the Bulldog, the Gold team were able to convert on a fake punt in the 4th quarter.
“I down-blocked kinda like a lineman. I got it done. It was fun.” Said Kelso, who also made a tackle during his time on the field at linebacker.
Castellanos, the district’s Utility Player of the Year who earlier in the week received an offer to play college ball at Sul Ross State, had a reception on two targets in the contest. He called it an honor to compete in the game with his Bulldog teammate Kelso.
“It’s a big opportunity. It’s huge to represent a small school, 3A like Marion with me and Kross both in this. We both got quite a bit of playing time. It’s awesome. I’m honored.”
McLeod did not play in the game due to injury. He was lost for the season in Seguin’s third game. He felt his leadership qualities helped him earn a spot on the All-Star squad from the selection committee despite missing most of the season.
“They see me as a leader of the team. So, they invited me to come play this game because I lead the team.” Said McLeod. “Even though I tore my ACL during the season, I was still a leader. I was still there for my team. I was at every practice at 5 in the morning. I showed up and I was there to lead my team.”
Team Black won the game, 41-34.
