Matadors Stay Perfect with Win Over Highlands

Seguin, TX, USA / Seguin Today
Matadors Stay Perfect with Win Over Highlands

Seguin senior forward Kevon Williams wins a tip for the Matadors

(Seguin) — Guard John Jackson scored 16 of Seguin’s 24 points in the 4th quarter leading the Matadors to a 81-73 victory over San Antonio Highlands on Wednesday afternoon. The junior, who came into the game averaging 29 points in 2 games this season, dropped in 33 points on the afternoon as Seguin improved their record to 3-0 before the Thanksgiving break.

With the Matadors leading 57-54 after 3 quarters, the Owls pulled ahead of Seguin 60-59 thanks to a pair of 3-pointers but the Mats would answer with a 14-5 run to take back the lead and hold on for the win. Jackson keyed the run offensively and Devin Matthews put pesky defensive pressure on the Owls to lead the Mat turnaround.

Following the game, Matador head coach Guy Nowlin credited Jackson’s play and the team’s defense late in the game in getting the win.

” (Jackson) is our leading stat guy for everything, offense, defense. So, he’s obviously a big piece of what we do, but (…) guys did their job defensively. It’s about a team effort not just one guy. We all picked each other up and weather storms and runs and that’s how the game of basketball goes sometimes.”

Senior forward Kevon Williams knocked down a pair of crucial threes for Seguin in the 3rd quarter as the teams each finished the quarter with 20 points. Nowlin said Williams worked through adversity and played well after missing the Matadors’ previous game.

“We want to run through Kevon as a point-forward type role. We weren’t able to get to some of that here in this game because Highlands does play good pressure defense. Kevon was a late scratch game time on Monday, so he’s been out there gutting it out and he did a great job for us as always.”

Williams finished with 17 points and Matthews added 11. The Matadors will have the Thanksgiving weekend off before they return to the court next Tuesday at Brackenridge.

Turning to the girls on the court…

(Geronimo) — The Navarro Runnin’ Lady Panthers on Wednesday picked up their 9th win of the season in 10 games taking down Devine at home 56-25. Sisters Tegan and Tatum Harburth lead Navarro offensively with 14 and 13 points apiece.

(San Antonio) — And every player got on the scoreboard for the Marion Bulldogs girls basketball team as they crushed Kenedy 59-26 on Wednesday at the home of the Spurs, the AT&T Center. And speaking of the Spurs, they didn’t fair so well following Marion on the court. They fell to the Pelicans 129-110 last night.
