Matadors Wrap Regular Season, Will Head to College Station for Bi-District

(Spring Branch) — In a game that did not have any bearing on the final standings in the district, the Smithson Valley Rangers beat the Seguin Matadors 56-17 at Ranger Stadium on Friday night. Smithson Valley came into the contest as the top seed in District 12-5A, while the Matadors clinched the district’s fourth spot.

The Rangers scored 5 touchdowns in the first half. Smithson Valley quarterback Chase Senelick accounted for two of those scores with TD strikes to receivers Quentin Sampson and Kyler Clarke. Clarke and receiver Brayden Bafidis ran for scores and Bradley Sowersby returned a Seguin fumble on a kickoff return for a touchdown. The Matadors got on the board with a 39 yard field goal from kicker Nathan Reyes on the final play of the first half.

Seguin took the second half kickoff and embarked on a drive that would eat up nearly ten minutes on the clock. Senior wide receiver Isaac Garcia capped the drive with a five yard touchdown reception on 4th and goal from freshman quarterback Corey Dailey to get the Matadors in the endzone for the first time, making the score 35-10.

Sowerby would hit paydirt on a three yard run for the Rangers early in the 4th quarter and Smithson Valley would score again on a 20 yard pick-six from Nicholas Dudzikowski to extend the Ranger lead to 49-10

Matador senior wide out Devin Matthews scored his team leading 19th touchdown of the season with about 3 minutes to go in the game catching a swing pass from Dailey and taking the ball to the endzone from 27 yards out to make the score 49-17. Sampson would close out the scoring with a 92 yard TD run for the Rangers.

Friday night’s contest was the first ever meeting between the two schools on the football field. As the champion of District 12-5A, Smithson Valley with a 9-1 overall record, will face the fourth seed from District 11-5A Cedar Park in the UIL Class 5A Bi-District round next week.

The Matadors at 6-4 overall on the season will head to College Station for Bi-District next Friday. The Mats have made the playoffs for a program first five straight seasons. Seguin will take on the A&M Consolidated who finished the regular season with an 8-2 record. The Tigers tied College Station and Georgetown at the top of District 11-5A. Each team went 1-1 against each other, but Consol earned the top seed by winning the point differential tiebreaker in the games played between the teams.

Seguin and A&M Consolidated will meet next Friday at 7 p.m. at Tiger Stadium. We’ll have all the play-by-play action for you starting with the Matador Pre-game show at 6:30 on KWED and streaming at SeguinToday.com
