(Spring Branch) — The high school football regular season wraps today and tomorrow for area teams. The Seguin Matadors know they will be the 4th seed out of District 12-5A. Their opponent tomorrow night, Smithson Valley, has wrapped up the top seed in the district. The teams will meet at Ranger Stadium. The Rangers are the number 9 team in Dave Campbell’s Class 5A Division One rankings and are unbeaten in district play.
The Matadors come into tomorrow night’s contest having lost their last two games and Seguin head coach Craig Dailey says they’ve played some good teams in the district and Smithson Valley is no different.
“Even though we’ve lost the last two games, I think we’ve gotten better on both sides of the football. Unfortunately we’ve played some pretty good football teams and this is another really talented, well coached football team. Offensively, we need a little more balance that we had the last week, but we’ve been really good at taking care of the football and making plays, so we just need to keep doing that.”
Dailey says they will look to get some momentum going tomorrow night as they get ready for the Bi-District round of the playoffs next week.
Seguin will play the champion of District 11-5A. A&M Consolidated, College Station and Georgetown are currently in a three-way tie for first place in that district with one game left to play. The Matadors game on Friday night can be heard on KWED. Kickoff is set for 7:30. Our High School Football Friday Night coverage starts with the Navarro Panther report at 7 O’clock. The Panthers take on Manor New Tech at home to close our their season. Navarro will be the 2nd seed out of District 13-4A.
There are a couple of games in District 12-5A tonight. Kyle Lehman plays at Hays. And San Antonio Wagner hosts New Braunfels Canyon in a battle for the 2nd place spot in the district.
(Marion) — The Marion Bulldogs have a virtual playoff game tonight in a battle for a playoff spot in District 13-3A. The Luling Eagles are in Marion to take on the Bulldogs. It’s win or go home. The winner of the game will make the Bi-District round, while the loser will be left out of the playoffs.
Marion head coach Ryne Miller says the Eagles are a physical team on the offensive and defensive lines.
“They’ve got some big boys (who) can move. They’re extremely physical up front on both sides of the ball. We’ve talked to our offensive and defensive lines all week (saying) we have to win the line of scrimmage.”
It will be Senior Night in Marion. Tonight’s game was moved up one day due to the possible threat of inclement weather on Friday night. If the Bulldogs win, they will clinch third place in District 13-3A and play the winner of Friday’s Hondo/Poteet game out of District 14-3A in next week’s Bi-District round.
With the game change to tonight, we will have the play-by-play of the Bulldogs and Eagles on KWED. Kickoff is set for 7 p.m at Veterans Stadium in Marion. The Bulldog pre-game show starts our coverage at 6:30 on AM 1580 and streaming at SeguinToday.com.
