(Seguin) — Coming back from a two-set deficit, La Vernia rallied for a five-set win over Navarro Tuesday night in the UIL Class 4A Region IV Bi-District volleyball playoff at Goldie Harris Gym in Seguin, taking the match 20-25, 21-25, 25-23, 25-17 and 15-9.
After dropping the first two sets, the Lady Bears came out strong in the 3rd set establishing and maintaining a lead throughout the set. The Lady Panthers kept pace and kept the score close but were not able to get over the hump and move ahead of La Vernia. Navarro head coach Misty Remmers said her team just could not get enough momentum going to take a 3rd set lead.
“The third set’s kinda been our Achilles’ (heel) all season. We got one, we get two and then somewhere in three we get lost along the way. Unfortunately things didn’t go our way and we couldn’t get our feet back underneath us again.”
The Lady Panthers got strong performances from Tatum Harborth who showed great court awareness setting up hitters and coming up with a number of digs. Ryanne Hepp had some crucial blocks. Sienna Kramer had some timely digs and middle hitter Taylor Helms was active on the court, scoring with kills and drop shots. Helms also came up with several blocks for the Lady Panthers.
Remmers said players like Helms and her sister Morgan make her optimistic about the future of Navarro volleyball.
“I am lucky I got to have a lot of those young kids get in and play. Obviously Taylor, moving her to the outside made a pretty big impact. I think her sister’s gonna have a good off-season. Our setter will come back which is nice. We’re gonna have a lot of key components come in. We might be a little bit younger than we’ve been in the past, but we’re gonna return back with a lot of kids. I expect defense and passing to be really good next year.”
The Navarro Lady Panthers end their year with 18 wins. Navarro finished 4th in the tough District 27-4A this season.
