New pre-fair bull riding event slated for tonight at county fair

(Seguin) – Guadalupe County does not have to wait until Thursday to enjoy some live action in the rodeo arena. This year, bull riders will get started one day early as the Guadalupe County Fair and PRCA Rodeo presents the BBR Backyard Bull Riding event. Tonight’s BBR event is dubbed “Where Legends Begin:  2022 Tour Open to the World.”

Mike King, one of the founders of BBR, says his team is excited about giving bull riders of all skill levels a chance to compete in its Seguin Showdown.

“We call it the ‘Legacy’ because once you start, you become a real good bull rider — you started from somewhere and there’s a lot of good bull riders that come from our program including a lot of PBR bull riders — Ezekiel Mitchell, Boudreaux Campbell and others and we’ve got some really good up and young talent, some older guys that they may not compete on a daily basis as the younger guys but they are still enthusiastic bull riders. They still got a lot of talent left in their bag and that’s what we bring to the table. We just bring a variety of bull riders from all over to congregate and put on an event. We are basically for the underdog or the guy trying to make it to the top but it gives them a stepping stone to get there. There’s been a lot of guys like Cooper Davis who has stepped off on our platform and succeeded and then just took off on the professional bull riding tour. It’s just a start for some people and sometimes, it’s just a good platform for them to be on,” said King.

King says he and his college roommate began the BBR simply as a means to grow the sport.

“We basically joined up and did something that we both have a passion for and just kind of grow the bull riding sport back because for some reason, it got away from everybody. So many different associations, they forgot about the little guys and we are just trying to build something for not necessarily the local guys but the guys at the beginning and the older guys that aren’t on that level anymore to compete at. We are looking forward to Seguin. We actually had an event there probably five years ago and it was a pretty good event. It was on a Sunday but we are doing this Wednesday event hoping to get people out of the house and excited about the rodeo,” said King.

Today, 40 bull riders from all across the state will be in town competing for some great prizes. King says tonight’s event will also feature three free style bull riders and the Mexican fighting bull.

Events get underway at 7 p.m. at the Guadalupe County Rodeo Arena. Tickets are available at gcfair.org under the pre-fair tab. General admission is $20 while VIP floor arena seating is $30.
