Neighborhoods to take a bite out of crime with parties, barbecues plus other special events
(Seguin) — A record number of neighborhoods will be taking a stand against crime tonight. Sarah Wallace, the community engagement officer with the Seguin Police Department, says 30 neighborhoods have signed-up to host official National Night Out events in the city of Seguin.
“We are super happy with it. We have 30 homes that signed up to host parties which we love because we are up by 11 from last year so we are super excited to see more folks out and getting involved in their community and having the opportunity to meet more people,” said Wallace.
Held in Texas on the first Tuesday of October, National Night Out, works on building police-community partnerships and builds a safer community, one neighborhood at a time. Furthermore, it provides a great opportunity to bring police and neighbors together under positive circumstances.
Although sign-up is over, Wallace says it doesn’t mean that block parties and other efforts to meet your neighbors can’t still happen.
“You don’t have to host a party to get involved. Chances are — I would say a majority of subdivisions are hosting a party so get out there and get on your community FB page and see if it is posted there. Reach out to neighbors and see if they have heard of anything and definitely get involved. Go out there. It’s a great opportunity to get to know your neighbors especially if you are in one of these newer subdivions and get to meet us as well. So, we would definitely recommend anyone getting out there and getting involved,” said Wallace.
Among those reaching out to the Seguin Daily News about their National Night Out party are the folks on Eastwood Drive. Residents there will be connecting with each other all while enjoying live music by Clint Taft. They’ll also be hosting kids games, snacks and drinks and a plant exchange.
Wallace says having folks sign-up with the Seguin PD was not for permission to host a block party or event but simply the chance to schedule a special visit by someone from the Seguin PD, Seguin Fire Department or other city department.
Meanwhile, a batch of neighbors out in Guadalupe County will also be coming together tonight for its annual National Night Out Party. The Creekbottom Farm will be hosting its annual party today from 6 to 8 p.m. The gathering will be held at the barn located at FM 4907 and 1044. Residents are encouraged to bring their own drinks, finger foods to share and a lawn chair. The group will be joined by Guadalupe County first responders and elected officials.
