(San Antonio) — The playmakers for the Seguin Matadors were on display in a 54-27 win over the San Antonio MacArthur Brahmas at Heroes Stadium on Saturday night. Freshman quarterback Corey Dailey threw four touchdowns for the third consecutive game and senior wide receiver Devin Matthews accounted for five touchdowns as the Mats improved to 2-0 in District 12-5A and 4-1 overall.
Matthews and Dailey teamed up for the Matadors first two scores in the first quarter. Following an interception and return by senior linebacker Hayden Ross that set the Mats up at the Brahmas 6 yard line, Dailey hit Matthews a play later for the first score of the ballgame for Seguin. The pair would strike again later in the first quarter on a 21 yard connection to give the Matadors a 13-0 lead midway through the quarter.
Dailey would throw his third TD in the quarter, this time an 18 yard strike to junior fullback Holt Haas to increase the Mat lead to 20-0. The Brahmas would get on the board in the second quarter on a 35 yard TD run by quarterback Michael Murach, but then Matthews would take a hand off from junior Donovan Cray on the ensuing kickoff and run 75 yards for the score to give the Mats a 27-6 lead. Junior running back John Jackson scored on an 8 yard touchdown run to put the Matadors up 33-6 at the half.
In the second half, following another Murach TD run, Matthews again took a handoff from Cray and carried the ball 80 yards to the endzone on the Brahmas next kickoff. Dailey would get his fourth touchdown pass of the night later in the third quarter when he found senior Isaac Garcia for a 44 yard score. Matthews would score his 5th touchdown of the night on a run in the fourth quarter to close out the scoring.
Dailey finished the game 15 of 18 through the air for 160 yards to go along with another 4 TD performance. Seguin is tied atop the District 12-5A standings with Smithson Valley and Hays after winning their first two district games of the season. The Matadors have a bye next week before they host Boerne Champion on October 7th.
