Free concert slated for tonight
(Seguin) — What better way to celebrate Hispanic Heritage Month in Seguin than with a night of music celebrating Tejano Queen Selena. Bidi Bidi Banda, a Selena tribute band will be leading that celebration tonight at Texas Lutheran University.
Ashlie Ford, TLU director of marketing and communications, says the campus can’t wait to share tonight’s free performance with the community.
“Tonight, we are so excited to welcome Bidi Bidi Banda. They are an Austin based band led by lead Stephanie Bergara and they perform the music of Tejano Queen Selena. So, they will be here tonight for a free concert at Jackson Auditorium starting at 7 p.m. This event is open to the public. No tickets are required, and our doors will open at 6:30 p.m.,” said Ford.
Selena Quintanilla Perez, who is simply known to the world as Selena, was an American singer from Corpus Christi whose successful impact in the music industry crowned her as “The Queen of Tejano music.” Selena’s contribution to not only music but also fashion has “made her one of the most celebrated Mexican-American entertainers of the late 20th century.”
Although, it’s been 27 years since she was shot and killed, Selena’s music continues to make an impact especially among an even younger generation of fans.
Ford says it’s for these reasons that she believes the local community will enjoy this latest gift from TLU.
“We really value the community that we are a part of, and we see ourselves as a community partner. So anytime, we can have this type of performance or a special guest speaker on campus, we want to invite the community to come and participate especially with an event like this where there is going to be live music and singing and dancing and hopefully, a really great turnout — people with their families, our students, people who work at TLU and just anyone in the community who wants to come out for a really fun night,” said Ford.
Ford says tonight’s free concert is just the start of other events being planned these next two months at TLU.
“Today is also the kickoff of Latin Heritage Month here on our campus and so this is kind of the first event in a series of a lot of events that will be going on now through October and we encourage the community to come out and listen to some great live music with us this evening,” said Ford.
Although they perform year-round, TLU will be the first Texas venue for the band’s own Hispanic Heritage Month concert schedule. Other performance locations for this month and next include Garland, Salado, Houston and Abilene just to name a few.
Ford again encourages all families to come out and enjoy a night of music. She says the concert is only one of many events that are extended to the community each year.
“This event is part of our (Jessie S.) Upton and (Jack Harold) Brown Cultural Events Series which is where we host different performances and speakers throughout the year that are open and free for anyone in the community to attend,” said Ford.
Today’s free concert, again, gets underway at 7 p.m. at TLU’s Jackson Auditorium.
