(Seguin) — The Seguin Matadors got some big special teams plays and a strong running game in a come-from-behind 42-39 victory over the Alamo Heights Mules on Friday night at Matador Stadium. The Mules took advantage of a Matador fumble and interception to score twice and take a 13-0 lead in the first quarter, but senior wide-out Devin Matthews answered the Mules second score with a 70 yard kickoff return for a TD to cut into the lead. After a 2 yard touchdown run by Mules quarterback Michael Terry put Alamo Heights up 19-7, the teams traded kickoff return TD’s with one from Matthews and one from Terry to make the score 25-14.
From that point on, Seguin running back John Jackson took over the scoring for the Mats starting with an 18 yard scamper near the end of the half to cut the Mules lead to 25-21.
In the second half, Seguin’s defense stopped the Mules on their initial possession and the offense took the lead for good when Jackson darted through and around the Alamo Heights defense for a 37 yard run along the left sideline for a touchdown to give the Matadors a 28-25 lead. Jackson would score on a 7 yard run and a 52 yard run to complete the Seguin scoring. The junior finished the game with 227 yards on 22 carries to go along with his 4 touchdowns. The Mats offensive line of Jake Mahaffey, Brayan Marin, Dane Jacobus, Cooper Newman and Seth Cevallos opened up some big holes up front for Jackson.
After the game, Seguin Head Coach Craig Dailey said the team had to overcome some mistakes, but made good adjustments at halftime to get the victory.
“Really, everybody made mistakes including the coaching staff. They gave us something that we hadn’t seen all week. They had some guys out and we probably should have made (better) adjustments. We had a drop and penalties on offense and we weren’t aligned right (on some plays) on defense, (but) our guys did a great job of making adjustments at the halftime.”
On defense, senior defensive end Jakob McLeod wreaked havoc in the Mules backfield, harassing Alamo Heights quarterback Colin Ernst constantly in the 4th quarter. Linebackers Brychan Dilworth and Hayden Ross had strong games for Seguin along with freshman cornerback Ian Moreno who had some big pass break-ups in the secondary. Junior Defensive tackel Evrin Contreras lead the Mats with 11 tackles.
The Matadors next play in New Braunfels this coming Thursday for their annual rivalry game with the Unicorns. Kickoff is set for 7 pm.
