TLU Bulldogs Get Practices Started

(Seguin) — The Texas Lutheran football team conducted their first pre-season practices over the weekend on campus. The Bulldogs have a brand new head coach this year. Neal LaHue comes to TLU after spending the last two seasons as the assistant head coach, offensive coordinator, and quarterbacks coach at Division-II Texas A&M – Kingsville.

We got a chance to visit briefly with Coach LaHue after the teams first practice on Friday. He says his coaching staff is working with over 100 players in camp in the weeks before the season starts.

“We’ve got 144 guys going through workout and 75 of them are freshman. It’s like learning another language (to them). So (first practice) was slow. We’ve got to be able to balance our workouts to where we’re getting our older guys ready to play week one and we’re trying to bring the younger guys along as well.”

LaHue says like in the spring, the Bulldogs came into the first practice with a good mindset.

“They have a great attitude. They had a great attitude in spring for 15 workouts. We got to do a better job coaching them obviously. First day, first practice, everybody’s got to figure out where they’re going and we’ll get that worked out as we go.”

LaHue is no stranger to TLU. He served as offensive coordinator and quarterbacks coach under coach Carl Gustafson for two seasons in 2018 and 2019. During his stint with TLU, the Bulldogs compiled a record of 15-5.

The Bulldogs will scrimmage Trinity next Thursday at Bulldog Stadium. TLU will open the regular season at home against Howard Payne on September 3rd. You’ll hear that game on KWED and streaming world-wide online at SeguinToday.com.

The TLU Bulldogs are working hard this morning in their first practice under new coach Neal LaHue.
